I ... K ... E ... A (chant it with me)

Our adventures are winding down.  Once JD finished his speaking engagement in Sacramento and his mom spent 10 days with us, we've realized that our fun is nearing an end.  In some ways, we'd like to continue playing for a while...in other ways, we're ready to find a place to settle in and get on with life.

I must, though, tell you about our visit to a new Ikea store in Sacramento.  I saw this monstrous blue and yellow (very bold colors) building as we drove into the city and I'd heard about the store from various blogs - but, I had NO clue what was so compelling about the store!  I told the family that I *had* to stop there!

NOW.  I.  KNOW.

Man alive, I could LIVE in one of those stores!  hehe

My MIL, KB and I went in - and we knew we were in for a doosey when they handed us a map at the front door!  The style of many of the products was not *my* style - modern, clean lines, sleek urban living.  That's not me.  But, the products were just plain stunning and many would fit with my idea of cozy!  I *loved* all of the organizing things - cabinets, drawers, movable things.  My MIL liked the kitchen gadgets.

If you have a store within a days drive, you must visit it.

My quilt designing inspiration even got into the act!  I'm sure I'll have an Ikea-inspired quilt pattern to launch in due time!

We're heading back to Utah to get our belongings.  The fun of travel is ending for the summer - but, the memories will live forever!

We're Off Again!

We've been in Sacramento since last Thursday, MIL has been here since last Friday.  Today, we move to the east side of the city, to the Placerville, CA KOA.

We've had fun while we've been here, but it sure is a tight fit with another body in the camper!  Our casa sleeps 10, but there are only 5 dedicated beds and 2 dedicated bedrooms (a queen for the parents and 4 bunks for the kids) ... which means, Mama Lu sleeps in the living room and all her STUFF is in the living room / dining room.  We're having to shuffle things here and there and everywhere just to move around!

My online pal, Donna Schwartz-Mills over at Socal Mom sent me some suggestions about what to do while we were in Sacramento - she has a daughter who is 10, so she knows about traveling with kids and finding things that pique their interest:

"Old Sacramento (just a few blocks away) is touristy, but fun. It's like walking onto a Western set. The kids will enjoy the horse and carriage rides, shops, etc. The California State Railroad Museum is there, too -- if your son likes trains, he'll love this. (You'll love listening to the docents, who are all old railroad guys and add a lot of personal observations to the experience.)

You may remember from history class that the Gold Rush began when gold was found at a sawmill owned by John Sutter. Unfortunately, that's about an hour's drive away in a town called Coloma. There's a California State Park near the very site where gold was first discovered, where your kids can pan for some gold dust today.

SO, we took Donna's advice and went to Old Sacramento and to the California State Railroad Museum and to the California Discover History Museum!

Here's our sign for the day - and I chose yesterday to be a crab - and everyone around me got it for FREE!

Newspaper or Paper Towels?

Sitting in my 'outside' office this morning, consuming gallons of caffeine and waking up ... looked around the campground and saw a man washing his car ... with Windex and a paper towel!  My goodness, you'd *think* there was more to do with a life than THAT!

West or East?

We're settled into the KOA in Sacramento Old Town.  JD's mom is flying in tomorrow to spend 10 days camping with us.

I just asked him what time her flight got in.

He said, "I am to meet her broom at noon."
